We’re looking for an experienced Microwave and RF Engineer to join a highly technical communications environment supporting critical P25 radio networks across the Victorian Metropolitan Mobile Radio (MMR) and Regional Mobile Radio (RMR) networks.
This role will provide specialist RF technical expertise across the operations, maintenance, engineering and upgrade of complex radio systems, microwave links and associated telecommunications infrastructure. You’ll support, triage and reconfigure live links, run coverage predictions, and act as the escalation point for Network Operations and Field Engineering teams. Tower and installation work is handled by riggers, so your focus is design, configuration and operational support.
This suits an engineer who has designed microwave links and supported them in live operations, and who understands microwave as a digital system built on radio principles at higher frequency.
- Permanent, full-time role based in Melbourne
- Up to $135,000 + Super, depending on skill and experience
- Join a global leader in mission-critical communications and public safety technology, offering the stability and scale of an established multinational alongside genuinely meaningful work
- Clear pathway to Senior Engineering Specialist / Design Authority
- 24x7 on-call roster with minimal ad hoc travel to metro sites
- Provide operational support, maintenance and technical escalation for microwave links and transmission infrastructure supporting P25 networks across Victoria.
- Act as the RF SME, supporting RF coverage, propagation, microwave links and network performance.
- Manage network-level configuration across mixed fibre and microwave transmission feeding multiple systems.
- Investigate and resolve complex RF and network performance issues, working with NOC, Field Engineering and vendors.
- Support network testing, integration, upgrades and ongoing improvements across radio and transmission infrastructure.
- Conduct RF measurements, coverage analysis and propagation modelling to ensure network performance and reliability.
- Design RF site configurations, applying deep technical knowledge of antenna systems, propagation characteristics and site-specific nuances to deliver optimal network performance.
- Conduct site surveys and spectrum analysis using industry-standard survey tools and spectrum analysers to assess RF conditions and identify potential interference.
- Perform coverage prediction, modelling and calculations to inform network design and validate performance against real-world survey measurements.
- Prepare clear technical reports covering performance, surveys and design recommendations.
- Support core network infrastructure including firewalls, routers, switches, microwave links, and physical/virtual servers, both remotely and onsite.
- Develop and maintain as-built documentation, change and problem management procedures, and test protocols .
- Full Australian working rights
- Tertiary Engineering qualification or strong equivalent industry experience.
- Hands-on operational experience with microwave systems, supporting, programming, triaging and reconfiguring them (Aviat preferred, other vendors considered).
- Experience designing microwave links and supporting them in live operations.
- Microwave coverage prediction and modelling experience.
- Strong understanding of microwave as digital systems operating on radio principles at higher frequency.
- Network-level configuration experience in a mixed transmission environment, not microwave in isolation.
- Strong report writing and documentation skills.
- Australian driver’s licence, willingness to travel to metro + remote sites and participate in a 24x7 on-call roster.
- LMR or P25 system experience (Motorola experience not required)
- RF survey tools and spectrum test equipment experience
- Knowledge of TSB-88 and ACMA spectrum licensing
