We are seeking an experienced Level 3 Operations Engineer to support a major radio network serving a Tier 1 mining customer. You will be the senior technical escalation point between the network operations centre (NOCC) and field teams. When a fault is complex or systemic, you find the root cause and fix it.
This is not an RF design role. This is hands-on operation and sustainment of live Motorola radio networks: core and network management servers, Windows and Active Directory infrastructure, IP and transmission networks, dispatch consoles and voice logging. You'll need to understand how these layers work together as one system, and you'll need real experience on Motorola radio platforms to be considered for this SME-level position.
- Brisbane based
- Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week, with an afterhours on call roster
- Permanent full-time or long-term contract opportunities available
- Contract: $715/day incl. super (roughly $172k annual package based on 48 working weeks)
- Permanent: up to $145k + super, depending on skill and experience
Operations and escalation
- Act as the Level 3 escalation point for NOCC staff and field engineers on complex or systemic faults
- Own incidents through to root cause and resolution, and escalate customer-impacting issues to engineering with clear evidence
- Participate in the after-hours on-call roster and support after-hours planned maintenance and upgrades
- Support and maintain Motorola radio networks (ASTRO 25 P25, Dimetra, MOTOTRBO), including central and remote sites, network management systems, dispatch consoles and voice logging
- Administer the Windows Server, Active Directory and server hardware that the radio network depends on
- Configure, maintain and troubleshoot IP networks, LAN/WAN, routers, switches and firewalls
- Support the microwave and MUX transmission that carries radio services, and understand how it affects the system end to end
- Support upgrades, integration, testing and certification activities
- Make sure installations and configurations meet documentation and quality standards, and keep as-built documentation current
- Develop procedures and work instructions for operations and support teams
- Work with operations, field engineers, project teams, customers and vendors, and represent operational engineering in vendor performance issues
- Mentor junior technical staff
- Travel to customer sites as required
- Full Australian working rights (no relocation assistance or visa sponsorship)
- Hands-on experience supporting Motorola ASTRO 25 (P25), Dimetra (TETRA) or MOTOTRBO (DMR) in an operations, sustainment or integration role. We are looking for 3+ years on at least one of these platforms
- Strong Windows Server and Active Directory experience (2016/2019), including server hardware and software maintenance
- Strong IP networking experience across LAN/WAN, routers and switches
- Proven Level 3 or SME fault finding on complex multi-site communications systems, ideally in a NOC or communications operations environment
- A clear understanding of how servers, networks, transmission and radio fit together as one system
- CCNA/CCNP, plus Cisco or Juniper experience
- Microwave and MUX distribution experience
- MCC7500 console experience
- Public safety grade encryption and key management
- Network security: firewalls, intrusion detection, antivirus
- VMware, Linux or SQL
- Tertiary qualifications in electronics or computer systems engineering (or equivalent industry experience)
This role suits radio core and network engineers who also run the servers and network around them, and IT or network engineers who have spent real time on P25, TETRA or DMR systems. Unfortunately, you won’t be the right fit if you are an enterprise IT administrator with no radio exposure, or an RF planning and design engineer without server and network operations experience.
How to Apply:
If you think this role could be a good fit for your experience, I’d be keen to hear from you. Send through your CV or click Apply, and let’s chat.
